ISSN 0001-5555 Immunosuppressive states due to immunological senescence (1) or administration of immunosuppressants (2) occasionally cause Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-induced B-cell lymphoproliferative disorders (LPDs). While methotrexate (MTX) is an anti-metabolite and anti-foliate agent for the treatment of cancers and autoimmune disorders, it can also potentiate tumourigenesis due to its immunosuppressive effect. EBV reactivation is observed in half of such cases, suggesting that EBV contributes to the pathogenesis (3, 4). A newly described clinicopathological entity, EBV-positive mucocutaneous ulcer (EMU), occurring in immunocompromised patients, has been proposed (4). We describe here a case of EMU presenting with large deep facial ulcers in association with MTX-LPDs, which has not previously been reported in literature.

Complete Remission of Methotrexate-Related Epstein-Barr-Virus-Associated Hodgkin-Like Lymphoma following Withdrawal of MTX Coupled with Clarithromycin Administration
Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are known to develop lymphoproliferative disorders (LPDs) during the course of illness, particularly in cases treated with methotrexate (MTX) for long periods. We describe a case of MTX-related Epstein-Barr-virus-(EBV-) associated LPD resembling Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL), in which a dramatic complete remission was achieved after withdrawal of MTX coupled wi...

Methotrexate (MTX) is a commonly used anti-metabolite agent. Increased risk of lymphoproliferative disorders (LPD) in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has been documented with the prolonged use of immunosuppressive medications such as MTX. This is thought to be the result of immune dysregulation and/or chronic immune stimulation. Most cases of LPDs regress following withdrawal of the off...
متن کاملOverexpression of Activation-Induced Cytidine Deaminase in MTX- and Age-Related Epstein-Barr Virus-Associated B-Cell Lymphoproliferative Disorders of the Head and Neck
Recent research has shown that activation-induced cytidine deaminase (AID) triggers somatic hypermutation and recombination, in turn contributing to lymphomagenesis. Such aberrant AID expression is seen in B-cell leukemia/lymphomas, including Burkitt lymphoma which is associated with c-myc translocation. Moreover, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) latent membrane protein-1 (LMP-1) increases genomic inst...
متن کاملHepatorenal Protective Effects of Sesame Seeds Oil, Flaxseed Oil and their Mixture against Methotrexate Toxicity in Rats
Background: Methotrexate (MTX) is an anti-metabolite drug used in the treatment of many cancers and autoimmune diseases. Methods: This study investigated the protective effect of flaxseed oil, sesame seed oil, and their mixture on the MTX-induced hepatorenal toxicity. Thirty rats divided into five groups of: normal control, MTX control, and flaxseed oil, sesame seed oil, and the mixture groups...
متن کاملThe Incidence of EBV in Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma: A Comparative Study of Immunohistochemical and PCR Techniques
Background and Objectives: Epstein Barr Virus (EBV) is one of the members of herpesviridae family and a sub-category of Gamma herpes virinae. EBV, which normally has CR2 or CD21 receptors on B-lymphocytes, has mutagenic features for them. The virus plays an important role in causing some malignant cancers. About 30% of the cases with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma are diffuse large B-cell l...
